Although the African is generally tolerant in the religious sphere, a problem arises from the universal and missionary nature of both Islam and Christianity. This article describes the setting for the present confrontation between Islam and Christianity in Africa. It concedes that there is indeed an area of legitimate religious confrontation which is not always recognized. This does not lessen the commitment to a genuine religious dialogue.
