ATW and PATR Public Lecture: “The Role of Inculturation for Christian Apologetic Witness and Dialogue in Sub-Saharan Africa,” by Prof Dr Benno van den Toren

09 Janvier 2023

Across sub-Saharan Africa, adherents of various Christian traditions have not only lived with religious plurality, increasingly they are now been challenged to re-tell the message of the unchanging gospel of Christ’s offer of salvation for humanity and become apologetic Christian witnesses amidst circumstances of plurality. Most often than not, the focus of such apologetic witness has been to address other religions – such as Islam, Buddhism, Hinduism, etc. – but rarely about addressing those who espouse primal spiritualities premised on African traditional religious cosmologies.

In contrast to such approaches, Prof van den Toren will give a public lecture in which he explores the importance of apologetic dialogue and witness as a dimension of interreligious encounter with traditional spiritual cosmologies. Emphasizing the apologetic encounter with primal religious traditions, Prof van den Toren will show how inculturation of the Christian faith is not only important for missiological and ecclesiological reasons but is also a crucial part of the apologetic witness in the African Christianity’s encounter with traditional primal contexts. The online lecture will hold on Tuesday 10 January 2023 at 7:00PM GMT (or 8:00PM Central European Time). The Zoom meeting details are: Meeting ID: 209 633 4620
Passcode: 495590.
