2 Fully-funded PhD Scholarship Positions at The University of Leuven (KU Leuven), Belgium

The research group Modernity and Society of the research unit of History and the Research Unit Systematic Theology and the Study of Religions of the University of Leuven (KU Leuven), are offering two fully-funded PhD positions, each for a duration of four years. Successful candidates are expected to conduct research on the project theme: “The Decolonization of the Roman Catholic Church in the DRC / Zaire, 1960s-2000s.”

Explaining further, KU Leuven writes: “Taking an interdisciplinary approach that intersects historical and theological methods, this project investigates how selected actors of the Roman Catholic Church have navigated decolonization after Congo gained independence. Whereas political, economic, military and demographic aspects of the decolonization of Belgian Congo have been studied thoroughly, our knowledge of the postcolonial developments in the RCC in Congo remains limited to specific topics (e.g. the massacres of missionaries in the 1960s) or general narratives (e.g. inculturation and dialogue).” The complete application dossier is due on 25 August 2022 at 17:00 CET. Selected candidates will be invited for interviews on 1 or 2 September 2022.
