AbstractCe recueil d’études issues d’un colloque tenu à l’Université de Fribourg en novembre 2004 est consacré au mouvement d’idées qui ont marqué le 2e siècle avant notre ère en Judée et à Jérusalem, mais également en Samarie. Les recherches historiques sur les événements et les bouleversements politiques ainsi que sur l’évolution sociale durant cette période sont nombreuses. Plus rares sont celles qui s’attachent à comprendre les changements de la pensée, notamment théologique. Les contributions de ce volume examinent l’impact de ce siècle sur la formation de la Bible hébraïque et grecque et soulignent la grande portée théologique de la rupture définitive entre les deux communautés de Jérusalem et de Samarie, vers la fin du siècle.

AbstractAu premier abord, l’appel adressé à Abraham est formulé d’une manière surprenante en hébreu. Son aspect réfléchi fait qu’il est souvent expliqué comme une invitation à une quête de soi. Cependant, l’observation d’autres occurrences de l’Ancien Testament montre d’une part que cette tournure « lekh-lekha » (va pour toi) est courante, et, d’autre part qu’elle est utilisée dans des contextes variés. L’approche philologique menée par Innocent Himbaza, qui étudie spécialement son sens littéral, révèle que cette tournure renforce le lien entre la personne agissante et l’action qu’elle doit accomplir. Il s’agit d’une stimulation du sujet visant à accomplir l’action véhiculée par le verbe.

AbstractThe expression 'the place that YHWH has chosen/will choose', found in Deut 12-26 and 31, is studied in narrative, historical and philological perspectives. Each separate approach is limited but taken together they lead toward the conclusion that the place is not yet chosen. In any case, the choice of YHWH should precede the building of an altar or a sanctuary by the people. However, the common verbal form used to express such an idea is a qatal form (= בחר). These observations lead first to the understanding of the expression as 'the place that YHWH will have chosen', and second to the conclusion that exclusive readings of both sides are late.

Abstract2 Sam 24:16–22 in 4QSam (4Q51) is reconstructed at least in six different ways by Eugene C. Ulrich, Kyle McCarter, Edward D. Herbert, Andrew Fincke, Frank Moore Cross and Anneli Aejmelaeus. Among them, only Cross and Aejmeleaus integrated the tiny fragment 165, and they disagree on its location in relation to the principal fragment. Divergences in reconstruction of this manuscript can be explained by its character as a textual witness, since it does not fit the known traditional texts such as the Masoretic Text (M) or the Septuagint (G). Furthermore, many conjectures of authors lead to different “possible” reconstructions of lacunae. It is the task of this contribution to reexamine the divergences in reading the extant text and in reconstructing the lacunae. Then, its characterization and its importance for Bible translations will be discussed.

AbstractLes prescriptions de Dt 27,2-8 reflètent un compromis entre différentes tendances parmi les adorateurs de YHWH. Selon le livre de Josué (Jos 8,30-35), leur accomplissement dans la région de Sichem dans le cadre de la problématique du lieu d’adoration de Dieu, a progressivement conduit aux positions irréconciliables. Cette question a vraisemblablement contribué au rejet de l’Hexateuque dans un premier temps et plus tard aux principales différences textuelles que nous connaissons entre Juifs et Samaritains. Selon la rédaction Pentateuque-Nebiim, la région de Sichem abrite un autel relais en attendant celui de Jérusalem. The prescriptions of Deut 27:2-8 reflect a compromise between different trends among YHWH’s worshipers. According to the book of Joshua (Josh 8:30-35), their fulfilment in the Shechem vicinity, whithin the whole question of the place to worship God, may have gradually led to unreconciliable positions. This question may have contributed to the rejection of the Hexateuch in earlier time and later to the main textual differences we know between Jews and Samaritans. According to the Torah-Nebiim redaction, the region of Sichem houses a temporary altar waiting for that of Jerusalem.

Abstract2 Sam 6,2 raises both textual and literary questions. On the textual level, no witness provides the original reading, since all the readings are the result of a literary development. However, the LXX of 2 Sam 6,2 is later than the MT since it depends partially upon it. The reading of 4QSama does not depend upon the MT of 2 Sam 6,2. Instead, it may have originated from the MT of 1 Chr 13,6 with which it shares literary concerns. Moreover, the presence of the name Baal in a verse concerning the ark of God may explain textual changes not only in the MT but also in the LXX.

AbstractIn an article written forty years ago, Dominique Barthélémy bound together two supposed scribal corrections introduced in the second Century the correction of the number of the Israelites who went down to Egypt (Gen 46,27; Exod 1,5), and the correction of the «Children of God» becoming «Children of Israel» in Deut 32: 8. This article proposes to separate the two supposed corrections. Considering the historical evolution of the theological interpretations the author argues that the correction of Deut 32,8 was introduced in the first Century CE only, when the interpretation of the «Children of God» was limited to the human sphere.

AbstractThe first chapter of the book of Esther is about the disgrace of Queen Vashti, the wife of King Ahasuerus (Xerxes), and the question of her replacement. Aside from the narrative questions which open the way for different interpretations, the text regulates a cultural matter in a world different from that of the modern-day reader. One is thus invited to put oneself in the place of those who lived in that culture, in order to understand the values which constitute the basis of familial harmony in that society.

This work is also to be made available in other languages (e.g., a Spanish edition of the GBC is in preparation [539]) The volume contains seventy-two short essays written by an international group of biblical scholars and religious workers from various hermeneutical, sociocultural, political, ethnic, religious, and gender perspectives. The majority of the contributors are from Latin America, Asia, Africa, and North America; other continents and/or ideological contexts are represented. (If one suggestion could be made, it would be to include perspectives from Russia and the countries of the former Soviet Union, since there the reading of the Bible has a long, complex, and unique history.) The contributors to this volume have rich, wide-ranging sociocultural and educational backgrounds. They speak from the heart and mind of true citizens of the global village. The GBC ’s introductory essays explain the theoretical and pragmatic rationale behind the volume and give some indications as to how the GBC can best be utilized by its readers. AbstractThe comparative study of the mixed texts found in the Nash Papyrus, Philo, 4Qphyl G, 8Qphyl 3 and 4Qmez A shows, on one hand, that their form of the Decalogue is closer to the version given in Exod than to that found in Deut, and on the other hand, that this Decalogue is closer to the Septuagint than to the Massoretic Text. The scribes who wrote these manuscripts copied the Decalogue of Exod from memory. This explains why the Qumran witnesses which are supposed to cite Deut contain the Exod form. This also explains the textual particularities in each witness, since the variants found in each of them are not always the same.

AbstractMost archaeological scholarship accepts as historical the information of 2Ch xxxiii 14, which claims that Manasseh built a fortification wall in Jerusalem. However, there is no unanimity as to its identification, since recent archaeological publications indicate at least two walls. Concerning theological publications, 63% of them do not include archaelogical data in their discussions on that point. This article points out this lack of balance and suggests a possible solution.

AbstractHimbaza untersucht die verschiedenen Textzeugen des Dekalogs. Er zeigt, dass allein die Versionen des masoretischen Textes in Exodus 20 und Deuteronomium 5 erheblich voneinander abweichen. Der Vergleich mit den Manuskripten aus Qumran, dem Nash Papyrus, der Septuaginta oder der Peschitta weist weitere Textvarianten auf. Auf diesem Hintergrund arbeitet Himbaza eindrucklich heraus, dass die Textentstehung und -ubermittlung sowie die Variantenbildung nicht immer erklarbar ist, und dass somit die originale Textfassung nicht mehr greifbar ist. Dieses Ergebnis und die Weitung des Blicks auf weitere Textzeugen eroffnet nicht nur der Erforschung des Dekalogs neue Moglichkeiten.
